These quick and simple homemade croutons are crispy, flavorful, and ready in minutes — all starting from a store-bought loaf of bread. With just a few pantry ingredients, you can transform plain bread into golden, crunchy bites that instantly elevate any salad, soup, or casserole. No need for fancy equipment or complicated steps — this recipe is perfect for busy weeknights, last-minute entertaining, or when you want to give your dishes a fresh, homemade touch without the extra work.
What makes this recipe so great is its versatility. You can use any bread you have on hand — from a crusty French loaf to soft sandwich bread — and customize the seasonings to match your meal. Olive oil, garlic powder, and herbs create that classic, savory crouton flavor, but you can easily experiment with Parmesan, paprika, or even a hint of chili for a spicy kick. Because you start with store-bought bread, prep time is minimal, and the oven does most of the work.
Once you taste these easy homemade croutons, you’ll never want to buy the packaged kind again. They’re crunchy on the outside, slightly soft in the middle, and bursting with flavor. Serve them on a Caesar salad, float them in tomato soup, or simply snack on them straight from the pan — they’re that irresistible. Plus, this recipe is a great way to use up leftover bread and reduce food waste while adding a gourmet touch to everyday meals.

Favorite sliced bread
Olive Oil (or other oil as preferred)
Salt, pepper, seasonings
Directions
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
- Slice bread into approximately inch cubes, they do not need to be exact but keeping them as similar in size as possible helps with even cooking. You can use any commercial, or home baked, bread for this.
- Put cubes in a bowl and season as desired. I like to use a little salt, pepper, onion, and garlic etc.
- Pour 2-3 tablespoons olive oil over the bread chunks and stir to coat with oil and seasonings. Adjust oil as desired, you don’t want them to be soaking but they need a light application to get nice and crisp.
- Bake on a parchment lined baking sheet for 3 minutes. Take out the croutons at this point and flip. Cook for another 3 minutes. They should be crisp but not completely hard either for a nice texture. Allow to cool on sheet and top on your favorite salad!
